Quick Tips

  • Use the longest stitch length that still holds the seam. Every hole weakens the laminate
  • Never backstitch. Tie thread tails by hand or use a seam knot
  • Tape seams with DCF seam tape for waterproof and structural reinforcement
  • Handle with clean hands. Oils from skin degrade the adhesive on some versions

Detail

DCF (formerly Cuben Fiber) is an ultra-high-strength laminate film for ultralight tarps, stuff sacks, and bivy covers. It doesn't stretch, doesn't fray, and is extremely strong for its weight. It's also unforgiving. Needle holes don't close up; every stitch is a permanent perforation. Longer stitch lengths are structurally better, not worse. Never backstitch. It concentrates holes in one spot. Secure thread ends by tying or with a seam lock knot. Most experienced DCF sewers use bonding tape (Cuben tape or similar) for most seams and stitch only where mechanical stress demands it. Advanced MYOG material; approach it after silnylon or X-Pac.
