Quick Tips

  • Pre-wash twice. Hemp shrinks significantly and the weave tightens with each wash cycle
  • Cut edges fray roughly; finish promptly with a serge or zigzag pass
  • The fabric is stiff out of the bolt and softens dramatically with use. Don't judge final hand off the raw material
  • Use clips, not pins, on oil-finished or coated versions

Detail

Hemp canvas is duck's natural-fiber cousin. Comparable weight and weave, but longer fibers give it better abrasion resistance per gram. Use it for aprons, workwear pants, tool rolls, and market bags. Pure hemp is rare; 55/45 and 70/30 hemp/cotton blends are easier to source. Sew it like duck canvas: heavy needle, polyester thread, walking foot for stacked layers. The differences are pronounced first-wash shrinkage and a stiff initial hand. Both resolve after one laundering. For workwear that molds to the wearer, hemp rewards the effort.
