Thread

  • Gütermann Mara 120 (fine polyester — matches the lightweight fabric)
  • Avoid heavy thread; it will pucker the fabric

Quick Tips

  • Use tissue paper above and below fabric when sewing. It prevents the feed dogs from chewing the fabric
  • Sew slowly and steadily; don't let the fabric bunch at the start of a seam
  • Hold thread tails when starting to prevent jamming
  • Test tension on scrap every session. Humidity affects this fabric's behavior

Detail

7D nylon is extremely lightweight and slippery. It pulls into the feed dogs at seam starts, jamming and tearing. Start with the needle down and hold fabric taut, not stretched. Tissue paper under the seam line, torn away after, prevents most of this. Heat-seal or French-seam allowances; the fabric is too light for serging. Best for stuff sacks, ultralight wind layers, and pack linings.
